Released in 1992 by Nonesuch Records, Pieces of Africa is a landmark studio album by the Kronos Quartet that bridges contemporary classical music with traditional African compositions. It was the first album to simultaneously top both the Billboard Classical and World Music charts. The album was inducted into the Library of Congress' National Recording Registry, recognized for its cultural and historical significance and was awarded the 1993 Edison Prize for Classical Music. The album features works commissioned by Kronos from seven African composers, many of whom perform on the tracks using traditional instruments like the kora, mbira, and tar.
