LaVern Baker Sings Bessie Smith is the third studio album by American R&B singer LaVern Baker, released by Atlantic Records in 1958. A departure from Baker's rock and roll hits like "Tweedlee Dee," the album is a tribute to the "Empress of the Blues," Bessie Smith, focusing on blues and jazz. The recording featured a sophisticated jazz backing band instead of standard R&B session players, including Buck Clayton (trumpet), Vic Dickenson (trombone), Paul Quinichette (sax), and Nat Pierce (piano). Engineered by Tom Dowd and produced by Nesuhi Ertegun.
