Released on December 27, 1967, Songs of Leonard Cohen is a poignant and contemplative masterpiece that represents one of the most remarkably realized debuts in popular music history. Arriving at the age of 33 after establishing himself as a published Canadian novelist and poet, Cohen bypassed typical pop conventions to construct a stark, monochrome world driven by love, lust, spiritual longing, and emotional betrayal. The album serves as an audacious foundation for a legendary career, introducing signature anthems like "Suzanne", "So Long, Marianne", and "Sisters of Mercy".
