Liars’ second studio album, They Were Wrong, So We Drowned (2004), is one of the most famously confrontational, career-endangering heel-turns in modern alternative music history. Following the critical success of their 2001 dance-punk debut They Threw Us All in a Trench and Stuck a Monument on Top, the band burned their own formula to the ground. Recorded in the isolated woods of New Jersey, the record is a loose, avant-garde concept album tracking the folklore of German witch trials and Walpurgis Night on the Brocken mountain.
