Lonnie Liston Smith and The Cosmic Echoes’ Cosmic Funk (1974) is a boundary-pushing work that solidified the keyboardist's transition from jazz sideman to spiritual jazz-funk pioneer. Coming hot off the heels of his seminal debut Astral Traveling, this sophomore album leans heavier into the groove while keeping its head firmly in the clouds, striking a perfect balance between earthly rhythm and celestial atmosphere.
