Lonnie Liston Smith and The Cosmic Echoes’ 1975 album Expansions, is a high point of the keyboardist’s solo career and a pillar for both jazz-funk and the later acid-jazz movement. Released on Bob Thiele’s Flying Dutchman Records, this record beautifully bridges the gap between the fiery, avant-garde spiritual jazz of Pharoah Sanders, the unsettled groove-heavy fusion of Miles Davis (both of whom Smith played with), and an infectious, summery street funk.
