Max Roach "Deeds, Not Words"

LP (NEW) - Vinyl, Riverside, US, 2013, OJC-304, 025218630412, Reissue

Deeds, Not Words (1958) is a pivotal recording in the career of jazz legend Max Roach, capturing the master drummer as he moved away from the standard hard bop of his mid-50s quintet toward a more experimental, "pianoless" sound. By removing the piano, Roach created an open harmonic space that allowed the horns and drums to interact more freely. One of the album's most discussed features is the inclusion of Ray Draper on tuba. While critics from Jazzwise praise Draper's "warmth and agility," others at MusicWeb International found the instrument occasionally too "cumbersome" for Roach’s high-speed tempos. The album's centerpiece is this nearly four-minute, unaccompanied drum solo. Reviewers from All About Jazz describe it as one of the most "melodic" drum solos ever recorded.
