Mink DeVille’s Le Chat Bleu (1980) is one of Willy DeVille’s gems, beautifully merging gritty New York punk-era energy with lush, cinematic European romance. Recorded partially in Paris, the album marked a dramatic stylistic evolution for the band, trading standard three-chord rock for sophisticated soul, accordion-driven Cajun rhythms, and sweeping string arrangements. Though Capitol Records initially delayed its American release out of fear that it was "uncommercial," critics instantly recognised it as a triumph, with the Rolling Stone critics' poll naming it the fifth best album of 1980.
