Raja Kirik’s Phantasmagoria of Jathilan is a masterful, bone-rattling fusion of ancient Javanese ritualism and uncompromising post-industrial electronics. Released in July 2023, the third album from Yogyakarta-based duo Yennu Ariendra and Johanes Santoso Pribadi takes the centuries-old Jathilan (or Kuda Kepang) trance dance and weaponises it into a 59-minute sonic assault against colonial oppression. The result is a brilliantly aggressive, deeply hypnotic experience that stands as one of the most original avant-garde releases of the decade.
