Released on 2 January 1970, The Madcap Laughs is the debut solo album by Pink Floyd's founding member, Syd Barrett. It is widely regarded as a foundational work for lo-fi and "freak folk" music, offering an intimate, often unsettling look into a deteriorating creative mind. The album's creation was famously "tortuous," spanning from May 1968 to August 1969. After initial sessions with Peter Jenner and Malcolm Jones, former bandmates David Gilmour and Roger Waters stepped in to help complete the project. Many tracks feature only Barrett's vocals and acoustic guitar. Producers purposefully left in false starts and Barrett's audible page-turning (as heard in "If It's In You") to capture his fragile mental state.
