Released in 1992, The Criminal Under My Own Hat is widely regarded by critics as T Bone Burnett's strongest solo effort since 1983's Proof Through the Night. It is often described as a return to his "modest rootsiness," abandoning the slicker pop-rock textures of his previous album, The Talking Animals, in favour of sparse, acoustic arrangements and "daring, off-kilter rock textures". The album's "operative philosophy" was to let the songs shine without excessive production. It explores deeply personal and socio-political themes. Burnett examines obsessions with pride, fear, and greed, often pointing the finger at himself as much as others.
