The Distillers | Coral Fang | Album
Released in October 2003, Coral Fang is widely considered the peak of The Distillers' career, marking a significant evolution from their hardcore roots toward a more melodic, grunge-inspired sound. Critics often compare the record’s "ugly-beautiful" intensity to seminal 90s albums like Nirvana's In Utero and Hole's Live Through This. Produced by Gil Norton (Pixies and Foo Fighters), the album moved the band away from the raw, high-speed punk of Sing Sing Death House. The production is notably more "glossy" and radio-friendly, however, most critics agree that the added polish enhances the "mechanical percussion" and "thrashing guitars" rather than diluting them.
