The Particles' 1980s Bubblegum, released by Chapter Music, is an archival gem that unearths the blueprint of proto-twee and jangly DIY indie-pop. Operating out of Sydney between 1977 and 1985, the duo of guitarist Peter Williams and the late vocalist Astrid Spielman defied the aggressive dogmas of the era's traditional punk rock scene. Opting instead for vibrant, hand-altered garments and gaffer-taped instruments, they ironically handed out business cards labeling their sound as "80s bubblegum". This career-spanning compilation proves that their playful, self-deprecating subversion actually predated and predicted the entire C86 movement and early 2000s twee-pop waves.
