The Story So Far is an American rock band formed 2007 in Walnut Creek, California, by Parker Cannon (vocals), Kevin Geyer (guitar, vocals), Ryan Torf (drums), Kevin Ambrose (guitar), and Kelen Capener (bass). Ambrose parted ways with the band when he went to college in 2010 and was replaced by William Levy on guitar. The band members were still in high school when they started playing together, with drummer Ryan Torf being in eighth grade initially. Their music has been described as pop-punk. With their fourth album Proper Dose marking a departure from pop punk and saw the band incorporating indie rock into their sound. The band has also been described as having an "edgier" take on pop punk, due to their frequent incorporation of hardcore punk and punk rock elements in their music. They hit the ground running with their debut album which Levy described as "Pop-Punk, with lyrics about Girls and growing up; grooviness, lot of energy captured a moment in time". RYM described the album as "a perfect compilation of everything you could ever want out of a classic pop punk album - angsty, misogynistic, nihilistic, whiny, yet powerful vocals, and sounding like it was meant to play all summer long". To-date the band has released only five studio albums. Standouts include Under Soil and Dirt (2011), What You Don't See (2013), Proper Dose (2018), and I Want to Disappear (2024). They grew up in Walnut Creek, California, most of them attending the same high school together. In Spin Magazine frontman Parker Cannon explained āgetting a band name is like the hardest part⦠A lot of our favorite bands were just titles of other bandsā songs or other bandsā records.ā In interview, the band reflected on their musical influences when they first started out being pop punk bands Blink 182 and Green Day. āI think we all kind of grew up in that era where a lot of the big pop punk bands were there, like the ā90s, early 2000s stuff" stated Frontman Parker Cannon. We landed on the band name "The Story So Far" after the Newfound Glory song of the same name.
