Released on August 14, 1971, The Who’s Who’s Next is widely considered one of the greatest rock albums of all time and a definitive classic of the arena-rock era. Born from the ashes of Pete Townshend’s aborted, futuristic multimedia rock opera Lifehouse, the record abandoned its convoluted sci-fi concept to deliver nine streamlined, explosive tracks that defined the sound of 1970s rock. The defining musical triumph of Who’s Next is its pioneering integration of the synthesizer. Instead of using the instrument for avant-garde textures, Townshend utilized the VCS3 and Lowrey organ to build propulsive, hypnotic rhythmic loops. These electronic soundscapes were then famously disrupted by some of the most monolithic, "meteorite" electric power chords in music history.
