Tom Waits | Alice | Album

Tom Waits’ Alice (2002) is a melancholic masterpiece of chamber jazz and avant-garde theatricality. Released simultaneously with its more aggressive sibling Blood Money, Alice consists of songs written a decade earlier alongside his wife and collaborator Kathleen Brennan for a Robert Wilson play. The opera loosely follows Lewis Carroll’s dark obsession with his young muse, Alice Liddell. The album is a smoky, turn-of-the-century dreamscape that strips away guitars in favour of pump organs, marimbas, cellos, and Stroh violins.
