Tom Waits' 1987 album Franks Wild Years is a brilliant, theatrical masterpiece that serves as the final chapter in his legendary mid-1980s Island Records trilogy. Following Swordfishtrombones (1983) and Rain Dogs (1985), this conceptual release expands on a spoken-word track from Swordfishtrombones. Subtitled "An Operachi Romantico in Two Acts," the record features music adapted from a stage play written by Tom Waits and his wife, Kathleen Brennan, which originally debuted with Chicago's Steppenwolf Theatre Company.
