Various Artists | Recommended Records Sampler (Comp.) | Album
The Recommended Records Sampler (1982) is a milestone of the late 1970s and early 1980s avant-garde. Compiled by Chris Cutler and Nick Hobbs, this double LP functions as the ultimate manifesto for the Rock in Opposition (RIO) movement and international experimental rock. Unlike traditional major-label samplers designed to recycle existing album cuts, Recommended Records took a radically distinct approach: every single track was an entirely new, exclusive recording provided by the artists. The result is a sprawling, 117-minute odyssey through post-punk, avant-prog, and unclassifiable atonal clatter.
