Various Artists | The Story of The Blues (Comp.) | Album
Compiled by renowned blues historian Paul Oliver, The Story of The Blues (1968, CBS Records) is an ambitious double-LP documentary. It sets a scholarly bar by tracing the music's lineage from African tribal songs up to sophisticated postwar boogie-woogie. It remains an essential, historically rich, albeit sonically raw, overview. Rather than a simple greatest-hits compilation, Oliver designed the album as an audio companion to his book of the same name. It tracks the chronological evolution of the genre.
