(World Psychedelic Classics, Vol. 5), released by David Byrne’s Luaka Bop label in 2013, is a masterfully curated compilation that unearths the hypnotic, ahead-of-its-time electronic Afro-funk of enigmatic Nigerian musician William Onyeabor. Recording between 1977 and 1985 in Enugu, Nigeria, Onyeabor self-produced eight albums packed with space-age Moog synthesizers, infectious drum machines, and heavy political messaging before abruptly abandoning his musical career to become a born-again Christian and a successful industrialist.
