Wolf Alice is an English Indie rock band formed 2010 by Ellie Rowsell (lead vocals, guitar, keyboards, synthesizer, piano), Joff Oddie (guitar, violin, synthesizer, backing vocals), Sadie Cleary (bass), and James DC (drums), in Islington, London. New members Theo Ellis (bass, synthesizer, backing vocals) and Joel Amey (drums, percussion, synthesizer, backing vocals) replaced Cleary and James DC in 2012. With their distinctive blend of vintage '90s indie rock, folk, electronic, and dream pop, Wolf Alice are one of the U.K.'s most eclectic and acclaimed new bands. The band played their first gig at Highbury Garage in December 2010 supporting April in the Shade, after Rowsell and Oddie met the band at an open mic at the Hope and Anchor in Islington. They released their debut single "Fluffy" in February 2013 and followed it with "Bros" in May. Their debut album My Love Is Cool, which was released in June 2015, includes their 2014 single "Moaning Lisa Smile", which peaked at No. 9 on US Billboard's Alternative Songs chart in August 2015, and was nominated for the 2016 Grammy Award for Best Rock Performance. To-date, all their album releases; My Love is Cool (2015), Visions of a life (2017), Blue Weekend (2021), and The Clearing (2025), are standouts. Also recommended are the 2014 EP Creature Songs and the Glastonbury (2025) live album. The band's sound is built on a foundation solid rhythm section, with layers of guitars and synths, overlaid by Rowsell's accomplished dreamy soprano vocals. Critics have compared the group's sound to bands such as Elastica, Garbage, the Duke Spirit, and Pixies. In interviews, the band themselves have cited their liking for the Vines, the Beatles, the Band, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Blur, and Courtney Love. The band name "Wolf Alice" was taken from a short story by Angela Carter, when Rowsell and Oddie first began playing as an acoustic duo. Filmmaker Michael Winterbottom followed Wolf Alice as they toured in support of My Love Is Cool. He filmed the band and also inserted two actors among them, playing members of the road crew, with a fictional love story developing as they moved from gig to gig. The resulting docudrama film, On the Road, was released in October 2016.
