Released in July 1966, the Yardbirds' self-titled album—famously known as Roger the Engineer—is widely considered the band's creative peak and a landmark of British blues-rock and early psychedelia. It is the only UK studio album by the group and the only one to feature all-original material. The album is a "kaleidoscopic journey" that captures a band in transition, bridging the gap between traditional 12-bar blues and the experimental sounds that would define the late '60s. Jeff Beck's pioneering guitar work, which utilised feedback, distortion, and fuzz effects in ways that arguably laid the groundwork for heavy metal.

The Yardbirds' 1966 album Roger the Engineer features cover art by band guitarist/vocalist Chris Dreja. Dreja is also a photographer and his images appear on several Yardbirds and Led Zeppelin albums.
