Released in November 1981, Technodelic by Yellow Magic Orchestra (YMO) is a dark, towering classic of electronic music. It stands as one of the very first albums in music history to rely primarily on digital samplers and loops. The trio used custom LMD-649 digital samplers. They chopped up real-world sounds, industrial noises, and vocal snippets into loops. This predated the mid-80s hip-hop and industrial explosion.A Moody Shift: Moving away from the joyful, upbeat "technopop" of their early work like Solid State Survivor, the band embraced cold-wave textures. They paired these with aggressive rhythms and a post-punk edge.
