In light of the disappointing farewell tour, it’s easy to picture AC/DC as a tired stadium act. As Peter Garrett put it at the final Midnight Oil show, they are ‘the great recyclers’.

But as any fan knows, there was a time before the endless series of identical, meddling records. AC/DC was once genuinely one of the best bands in the world with one of the best frontmen in rock history.

And that energy, that ferocity, that power is all captured on the criminally underrated live record ‘If You Want Blood’. This one boasts some of the best performances from the band ever put to record, and documents Bon Scott as the powerhouse he was as he shrieks and charges full force throughout this entire hour.

Recorded in Glasgow on one of the treasured UK/Europe shows from their golden era, the record is, at worst, the best AC/DC live record and, at best, one of the best live records of all time. It has some of the best Bon-era Accadacca tracks, and they’re here and sounding better than the studio records. Just hear ‘Let There Be Rock’, ‘Whole Lotta Rosie’ and ‘Riff Raff’.

After listening to those first few records to death, finding this gem gave the band a new life for us. And it pays tribute to Bon in the best way possible, which is especially powerful considering that within 18 months of recording, he would pass.

Like all the best live records, it reminds us of just how special the band once was.

‘If You Want Blood’ is available in the Store now alongside all other AC/DC classics.
