As far as classic Australian records, ‘Woodface’ is easily in the top ranks. It leads the Crowded House collection by a country mile and rounds out their first three record run with an incredible victory lap.
It showcases Neil Finn’s songwriting muscle, and during a time when grunge was beginning to dominate commercial rock, it ushers out a more acoustic and tender side of music that is yet to return to mainstream light.
Coming out of what remained of Split Enz, Crowded House superseded its predecessor on the self-titled 1986 record alone. But what the band managed to achieve within the next 5 years is what cemented them in Australian music royalty.
And the record has the hits to back it up, our personal favourite being ‘Weather With You’ as a sing-along for all occasions. Otherwise, there’s the beautifully intimate ‘Fall at Your Feet’, which is a quiet heavy hitter in their live set to this day. Besides the hits, lesser-known highlights for us are ‘Italian Plastic’ and ‘There Goes God’.
These tracks add to that core set of CH songs that see them still headlining festivals to this day.
And that’s it. It’s an Australian classic of a bygone era that remains alive through the band today.
‘Woodface’ is available in the Store now.
