Cameron Winter | Feature

• Cameron Winter • Geese

Now, I’m not saying I’ve been told to review this one, but Geese are currently on track to put us into early retirement.

They’re a modern music phenomenon that none of us picked to become the next big rock act, and one that everyone else has already discussed to death over the last 18 months.

But rhetoric aside, we skipped over ‘Heavy Metal’ for a while there because, to be honest, it just didn’t click the first few times around. Then the ‘Getting Killed’ hype train rolled in and gave us a licence to print money.

It wasn’t until the last few weeks, when the ‘Live at Carnegie Hall’ record finally came out, that it all clicked for us. The space afforded by the live setting really gives the songs room to breathe, with the performances giving new life into the material.

And then it all made sense. It’s amazing how the record manages to be as heartbreaking as it is moving. It sweeps back and forth between grief, angst, perseverance and everything else in between.

‘Nausicaa’ is an absolute standout, with ‘Cancer of the Skull’ and ‘$0’ serving as stellar showcases of just how dynamic the guy can be.

We can’t wait for the PTA film to come out and hopefully bring some more love to this material. Having said that, it’s not like Cameron or Geese need it.

And they’re touring Australia again next March.

‘Heavy Metal’ is available in the Store now.
We’d usually have everything else, but it sells out as soon as we stock it.
