Melbourne makes perfect sense for trip-hop, and we don’t know how it’s taken this long to deliver it.
Acopia is a Melbourne trio that hones the classic trip-hop aesthetics of Portishead with a new edge that brings the genre into 2026. The band just released their third record, ‘Blush Response’, last year. But their self-titled effort from 2023 shows the group striking gold.
With an outstanding grasp of the sounds they’re channeling, they conjure incredibly intimate atmospheres that are as reverb-drenched and spacey with drum machines and rhythm, all perfectly accompanying the siren-like vocals.
The tracklist on this one is incredibly tight. We love ‘Be Enough’ and ‘What I’ve Been Looking For’. It’s a listen that punches far above its weight, and that quality seems to be showing in how much attention they're starting to get on their international tours. Fingers crossed they’re back here for more shows soon.
Otherwise, this one prompted us to check if there are any similar acts floating around Melbourne right now. We just found ‘Dumbhead’, let us know if you know of any others.
Shoutout to Derrick Gee for the recommendation.
This one is available in the Store now.
