In light of their new record and first Australian tour in 13 years, we can’t keep this one in stock.
And for good reason. This is the best Britpop record from the best Britpop band.
Pulp tackle the working class aesthetics of Britpop directly on ‘Different Class’ and not through the co-opting of football hooliganism, or attempting an endearing satire, but rather striking it at its core via Jarvis Cocker’s razor-sharp tongue and mind for storytelling.
Every song tells a story. All of them are laced with Pulp’s signature debauchery, heartbreak, and overall lust, but they’re driven by an undercurrent of gaps in class, much like the time in which the record was written.
Whether that’s about an affair (‘Pencil Skirt’), lost high school sweethearts (‘Disco 2000’), or music festival culture, there’s a striving to not just appropriate class aesthetics, but actually paint a more compelling picture of life under that system.
Pulp have always been incredible storytellers, but here they peaked after honing in on the previous year's ‘His and Hers’, which is essentially this record without the higher-class concept. And they continued their hot streak into ‘This Is Hardcore’ and last year's grand return, ‘More’.
Their place in music has never been clearer as we pass the 30th anniversary of one of the best British records of all time. And amidst the Oasis reunion and the 2023 blur reunion, Pulp have delivered more than either of these bands in terms of substance and quality.
‘Different Class’ is available now in the Store.
